Replacing the Desiccant

The ST-8300 contains a small packet of desiccant that keeps the CCD from frosting when it’s cooled. This desiccant should last for several years but it won’t last forever. If you start seeing things appear in your images that look like shadowed tendrils you should suspect frost on the CCD and it may be time to replace the desiccant. You can get the replacement desiccant from us and it’s easy to replace with the following procedure:

2. Remove the camera’s front cover by loosening the four socket-head cap screws (SHCS) that hold it in place.

3. Remove the shutter or filter wheel by unscrewing the small Philips head screw and washer that holds it in place. Make sure you know which side goes up. With filter wheels it the side with the filters but with shutters you’ll have to keep track of it as they won’t work right if flipped.

4. Remove the CCD Cover/Window Plate by loosening the four SHCS that hold it in place.

5. Pull out the old desiccant pack and replace it with the fresh one. You may have to wedge it in there or fold the bag slightly to get it to fit.

6. If the CCD cover glass is spotted it is easily cleaned with a cotton swab and isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. Dust here is very critical, so take care.

7. Replace the CCD Cover/Window plate, shutter and front cover.

8. Let the camera sit for 24 hours before cooling to give the desiccant time to equilibrate the CCD chamber.

Regenerating the Desiccant Plug

The desiccant absorbs moisture in

the CCD chamber, lowering the dew

point below the operating temperature of the cooled CCD, thus preventing

the formation of frost. The desiccant is

contained in a small cylindrical plug

that screws into the chamber from th

e rear. In normal operation the useful

life of the desiccant is over a year. If

the CCD chamber is opened often, the

desiccant should be regenerated when frosting is noticed.

Follow the procedure below to regenerate the desiccant:

1. Unscrew the desiccant container from

the side of the camera opposite the

connectors and remove the O-ring.

2. Plug the resulting hole by screwing in the supplied bolt or plug 2 or 3

turns.

Finger tight is adequate. Don't put a wrench on it.

3. Heat the desiccant container in an ov

en at 350°F (175 deg C) for 4 hours.

The solder used to seal the can melts at

460 degrees F, so be sure to stay at

least 50 degrees below this number. Preheating the oven to avoid hot spots

is advised.

4. Replace the desiccant container into cam

era, being careful to reinstall the

O-ring and insure that it does not get pinched.

5. Expect the camera to take an hour or

two to reach the frost free state. If it

does seem to frost the procedure can be repeated letting the camera sit for

24 - 48 hours between bakings. If need to capture images and do not have

time to bake the plug, in an emergency, simply reduce your cooling to the

zero degree C range - the CCD dark current will still be quite low.

Bo to jest chyba do STF-8300.

W ST-8300 jest inaczej

Obawiam się źe woreczków się nie praży. Używałem takiego dessicanta z wymiennym wkładem do st-2000 i zalecali wymane na nowy woreczek. Bylo napisane - nie wyprażać!

Te woreczki z desiccantem są w rozmiarze 14mm X 24mm 0,25g , ale nie bardzo mogę znaleźć, gdzie to dostać na naszym kontynencie.

może być ciężko, najmniejsze jakie udało mi się znaleźć w Polsce to 35 x 18mm 0,5g

Chyba trzeba będzie zza oceanu ściagać..

Obawiam się źe woreczków się nie praży. Używałem takiego dessicanta z wymiennym wkładem do st-2000 i zalecali wymane na nowy woreczek. Bylo napisane - nie wyprażać!

 

Woreczki najprawdopodobniej z Tyveku, także długotrwale nie można przekraczać 80*C.

Można taki wkład/woreczek zregenerować, przez włożenie go na ~dobę do słoiczka z wyprażonym sitem molekularnym (lepsze, ale trzeba prażyć w 300*C) lub żelem krzemionkowym - wystarczyło by kilkadziesiąt gramów.
